Flag Raising Ceremonies for Green Schools and Digital Schools of Distinction Awards 2017 On Tuesday June 27th we celebrated two
fantastic achievements, our first Green Flag and the Digital Schools’ of Distinction award with a flag raising ceremony. The ceremony opened with a Green School song composed especially for the day by the children of the school. Following on from this Ms. Kennelly welcomed everyone – parents, children, staff, Board of Management and our special guests Rose Kinehan, former principal of the school and Gerard McHugh chairperson of the Digital Schools of Distinction Award and Director of Dublin West Education centre and Fiona Thomas assessor with the Digital Schools of Distinction award. Helen Arnold, our chairperson spoke about how wonderfully confident and competent the Children are with I.T. in our school. Children from every class spoke about how I.T. enhances their everyday school life and what it means to them to be part of a Digital School of Distinction. They told us about coding with Scratch, using online sites such as ixl.ie researching projects and lots more. Following on from this Gerard McHugh, who had travelled all the way from Dublin to be with us on the day, spoke about the Digital Schools of Distinction Programme and we learned that Bishop O’Brien N.S. is in the first four hundred Schools in the country to achieve the award. Gerard McHugh then proceeded to raise the Digital Schools of Distinction flag with the oldest child in the school C. Kingston. Next we turned our attention to our first Green Flag! Children from the Green School Committee spoke about our two year campaign to achieve the flag The whole school then proceeded to perform our Green School code in a rap using body percussion. Ms. O’Sullivan proceeded to raise the Green School Flag with the youngest child in the school T. Hegarty Following a great big cheer, the children closed the ceremony with their Green School Song The children were treated to ice-creams after the ceremony!
