Proclamation Day 2016

Picture

A wonderful day was had by all on Tuesday March 15th when we

celebrated ‘Proclamation Day’ in our school. It was a very special day

as schools across Ireland remembered and commemorated the events

of Easter Week 1916. The theme of the event was ‘Remember ,

Reflect, Re-imagine’ .

To mark the occasion we had a ceremony to raise the Irish Flag which

was presented to us by the Defence Forces earlier in the school year.

Our ceremony opened with the raising of the Irish Flag by Acting

Squadron Sergeant John Hanley.  John Hanley along with our

Principal Joanne O’Brien Kennelly, the chairperson of our Board of

Management Helen Arnold and our local historian  John Arnold

proceeded to read out the 1916 Proclamation .

The very inspiring 2016 version of the Proclamation composed by the

children of the school was then read out by the students. In this

‘Proclamation for a New Generation’ the children re-imagined the type

of Ireland they would like for themselves and future generations.

John Arnold our local Historian gave a very interesting and informative

speech about the 1916 Proclamation and also on the history of the

Irish flag.

Some of the children from 4th, 5th and 6th class who had recently

made us all very proud by coming second in the Leiriú section of the

Scór na bPáistí competition with their historical sketch, performed this

piece excellently for us again on the day. The act which is called

‘Bartlemy Remembers’ is based in a modern day classroom looking

back to the events of 1916.

The children accompanied by Mrs. O’Brien Kennelly played Amhrán

na bhFiann on the tin whistle and everyone joined in for the singing of

our National  Anthem.

Our ceremony concluded with the Siege of Ennis which was enjoyed

by all.

Proclamation Day was a memorable success. We are very lucky in

Bartlemy National School to have such a wonderful network of support

in both the parents and friends of the school and we would like to

thank all who participated in and attended on the day.

Below are some of the photographs from the day thanks to our brilliant

photographer Una Finn.
