Our 'Energy' Day of Action

Picture

We have had a busy start to the year monitoring our energy use and making plans for our Day of Action.

On Thursday October 25th, we held our Day of Action. We had ‘Low Energy Day’ in our school. Where possible we will avoided using things in our school which need energy e.g. lights. interactive whiteboards, photocopiers, projectors…!

On the day the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) called to our school to carry out workshops and experiments with pupils from 1st - 4th class.
5th and 6th class ran their own workshop with the Junior and Senior Infants. They had lots of fun making bees with the slogan "Bee Bright, Save Light!"

We also took part in a poster and slogan competition on the theme of energy. The winners from each class will be announced after the Halloween break!

School Garden

We would like a say a huge thank you to our wonderful parents who gave their time so generously over the summer to revamp our raised beds and school garden. The area looks fantastic and the children are looking forward to putting their green fingers to good use in planting crops and flowers for the spring.

Summer Clean Up

Last June we rescheduled our National Spring Clean Day to have an End of Year Clean Up in the summer sunshine.

Thankfully, litter (we are proud to say) was thin on the ground. However, we were kept busy with brushes, dust pans and sponges to make sure the school and grounds were spick and span before the holidays!

A huge thank you to everyone who was involved!

First Green Flag!

Picture
We have recently been awarded our first Green Flag! The Green Flag (based on the theme of Litter and Waste) was presented to our school by An Taisce at an awards ceremony  on the 11th May.

Two pupils from our Green Schools committee attended to accept the award on behalf of our school.

We will hold a flag raising ceremony in June.

National Spring Clean 2017

Picture

On the 27th April 2017 we took part in An Taisce's National Spring Clean. A clean-up of the school grounds and the local area took place (including the church grounds and the village).

The litter was then sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

It was a great day which taught us that we are all responsible for our local environment and ensuring that it is kept litter free and looking its best.

We would like to thank everybody who took part!

We are delighted to inform you that we have officially been awarded our first Green Flag! Everybody in our school has worked hard to help us to achieve the Green Flag. We received very positive feedback from the Green Schools assessor who came to our school to examine and review our progress.

Our Action Plan

We have been working hard over the past year in order to achieve our Green Flag (Litter and Waste). We have been trying to reduce the amount of litter and waste produced at home and in our school. In recent weeks, we have been completing litter and waste awareness surveys, monitoring the bins and calculating the waste produced by our school in order to see of our efforts have paid off. Check out our Action Plan below to see the progress we have made so far!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to two of our former Green Schools Committee members. Thank you Miss Higgins and Evan Murphy for all you have done in helping us work towards earning our first Green Flag. We look forward to inviting you both back to our school when we raise the Green Flag!

Day of Action

On the 26th April, we had our Green Schools Day of Action
which coincided with the An Taisce’s National Spring Clean week. We began in the morning with a clean-up of the school and local area including the church grounds and the village green. The litter was sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

We created imaginative pieces of art reusing recyclable materials such as newspaper, cardboard and plastic. We also did science experiments using recyclable materials.

Our guest speaker from Cork County Council, Colette Creedon visited the school to give a workshop on litter and waste management and energy efficiency for the senior classes. Meanwhile, the children in junior classes enjoyed stories about ‘Litterbug Doug’ and ‘Michael Recycle’ and made posters of their own recycling superheroes.

It was a great day which taught us that we are all responsible for our local environment and ensuring that it is kept litter free and looking its best.

We would like to thank everybody who helped to make this such a successful day
